LSP activists stage demo, seek apology
The reported comments of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N Chandrababu Naidu that Congress funded Lok Satta Party (LSP) in the recent elections to defeat TDP, triggered widespread protests today.
Leaders of various political parties including LSP, PRP and Congress reacted sharply to the comments of Naidu.
Mild tension prevailed at TDP headquarters, NTR Bhavan, today as the LSP leaders staged a demonstration before TDP office demanding an open apology to LSP. “Naidu should apologise for his remarks or he should come for an open debate with us. Lest, Naidu should be prepared to face legal consequences,’’ LSP spokesman Katari Srinivasa Rao. “We are planning to file a defamation case against Naidu, if he did not tender apology,’’ Srinivasa Rao said. As the LSP activists staged a silent protest before NTR Bhavan, the TDP workers too launched a counter dharna.
TDP chief at a review meeting of Greater Hyderabad party unit, reportedly said that Congress funded LSP to defeat the TDP. Naidu also said that the the presence of Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) too helped Congress to retain power. In a fix, the TDP leaders, however, said that Naidu did not issue any statement. “As a political party we would express several views in our internal meetings. Naidu made certain remarks in the interanl meeting. He did not air his views publicly,’’ party leader K Yerran Naidu told reporters here today.
But, the LSP and TDP leaders have locked horns with each other. The LSP termed TDP a family-run party. The LSP leaders said that they would audit their accounts every year and TDP leaders could access them. But, TDP leaders said that they too present the income and expenditure statements in party Mahanadu every year. “If LSP wants we will give a copy to them,’’ Yerran Naidu said. The PRP too opposed Naidu’s critical remakrs.
THE PROVOCATION
According to analysts, TDP chief comments were intended to demoralise the LSP, as the yellow party was worst affected in the recent Assembly elections because of LSP in several segments.
TDP think-tank is learnt to have understood that 80 per cent of votes the LSP got in the Assembly elections were traditional votes of TDP.
The middle class, the urban voters were shifted to LSP in the elections. The remaining 20 per cent votes of LSP came from Congress. The Government employees and retired staff, the traditional voters of Congress, voted this time to LSP, a TDP leader said. This view also figured in the recent TDP review meeting.
Naidu’s outburst against LSP was nothing but to unpopular the LSP and to bring the deserted voters back into TDP fold in the GHMC elections.
